MY EARLY BEGINNINGS
I was born and raised in a small town called Yarsonnoh (with less than 200 people) in a family with 15 siblings. According to my parents, my mother gave birth to me on a rice farm during the cold month of December in Liberia when they had gone to harvest rice on the farm. Growing up as a child was not easy for me. We could barely find food to eat on time like other kids who were from rich parents. Among my siblings, I was usually the one waking up early in the morning to go on the farm with my father to drive away birds while others were still sleeping.
I entered the elementary school for the first time when I was 15 years of age. As old as I was, I was sometimes bullied by my friends and this served as a challenge for me to push myself harder. My little town never had a school so I used to walk with other kids to a distant town that had a little school where I started writing my A.B.C. for the first time. My parents could hardly afford money to buy my notebooks for school. I sometimes used to go and work on other people’s farms in other to get money to buy my notebooks. Several times I nearly dropped out of school because of the financial struggle that I was going through. I would use one pair of blue jeans pants and one round neck white t-shirt over and over again because I had no option but to use the same suit for school and regular use.
I went through this and got out of high school; however, going straight to college like most other high school graduates was not an option for me because I never had the financial means to go to college until I traveled to the United States of America (U.S.) in 2010.
MY MOTIVATION
Growing up as a young man in Liberia, I saw first-hand the devastating effects of two Liberian civil wars which burned my home village, Yarsonnoh, completely to the ground and killed more than 100 people. These wars, the first occurring from 1989 to 1996 and the second from 1999 to 2003, decimated the country. Nearly half a million people were killed and the country was plunged into deep poverty.
I was able to secure a visa to the U.S. through the lottery system. I immigrated to the U.S. in 2010, worked very hard, and was able to bring my wife, Patricia, and children to join me in Wisconsin. My family and I are doing well and are deeply grateful for the blessings. This gratitude compels us (Patricia and me) to give back to our village and country.
We recognize the urgent need for healthcare in Yarsonnoh and the neighboring villages. This recognition is due to the fact that I was born on a rice farm. Because of this history, we have decided that building a clinic in that area will be one of the best ways we can help our family, friends, and community in Yarsonnoh and Liberia.
